About

This blog is an online notebook on my adventures, misadventures, discoveries and insights in the world of languages. I will try to write from the perspective of a language learner, not from the point of view of a language teacher. Thus, the treatment of the articles will be more experiential than academic.  I plan to share tips & tricks, shortcuts, resources, insights, blunders and pitfalls I encountered in the process of learning.

I am not a linguist; I'm just a person fascinated and amused with languages. I don't consider myself  an expert in any of the languages that I will write about (not even Filipino/Tagalog, which is my first language, nor English, my second).  But I think this is precisely the point and strength of this blog - to walk through the World of Words, not as a creator or expert but as an explorer, falling into pits sometimes, at other times, making steep ascents, and still at other times, discovering great landscapes.

I think I got  my amusement for languages when I was 9 years old and I picked up a Japanese booklet lying on the street where I was passing by.  I remember scanning through it for some days, completely amused. Of course, I did not retain any of the Japanese expressions I learned then, but it enkindled my fascination for languages forever.

I now live in Cebu,  having come from Manila, Philippines. I foresee that most of the posts in this blog will be about Cebuano/Bisaya, Spanish, Japanese and Latin. There may also be some posts on Tagalog and English (many times we neglect the language we're most familiar with). Of course, entries on other languages may also come out from time to time.

As a fellow language learner/enthusiast, I would love receive get feedback from you.

  1. I came from Lang-8.com. I'm Michael Silva Shred, I have read a little and it is really interesting. I do really enjoy learning languages specially English, I've known some chinese and australian people, and I know something about their cultures from they've told me. It's great to learn everything we can while living because there is only one life

    Good idea!
